Survey on Indoor Hockey Players’ Understanding of Game Rules at the West Kalimantan Provincial Championship
Understanding the rules is an important cognitive component of an athlete’s competence; however, empirical data on regional hockey athletes’ understanding of official rules in Indonesia remains limited. This study aims to determine the level of athletes’ understanding of game rules at the West Kalimantan Provincial Indoor Hockey Championship (Kejurprov). This study used a quantitative descriptive design with a survey approach. The population consisted of 144 male athletes from 12 regencies/cities; 36 athletes were selected through probability random sampling. Data were collected using a true-false knowledge test based on the FIH Rules of Indoor Hockey, consisting of 38 valid and reliable items (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.926) out of 42 administered items, and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The athletes’ overall level of understanding fell into the “Very Good” category, with an average score of 91.89%; 86% of the athletes were categorized as Very Good, 11% as Good, and 3% as Fair. Test items related to player equipment, game procedures involving referees, and penalty/sanction procedures showed the highest error rates. Athletes competing in the West Kalimantan Provincial Indoor Hockey Championship demonstrated a very good understanding of the official rules of the game. Coaches, athletes, and federation officials need to continue strengthening rules education—particularly regarding situational and contextual aspects of the rules—through structured training programs based on scenario simulations.
